Eighth Queens’ Distinguished Lecture in Law Redress Solutions Prizes for Academic Excellence Redress Solutions LLM Studentship

2023 marked the eighth anniversary of the Queens’ Distinguished Law Lecture (the “Lecture”) which, together with several prizes and a Studentship, are proudly supported by Redress. Hosted by Queens’ College Cambridge and Queens’ President, Doctor Mohamed El-Erian, the Lecture allows both Members of Queens’ and distinguished guests to participate in the latest and most advanced thinking on the law. The Lecture was initially planned to take place as usual during the Michaelmas term but had to be postponed following the sudden passing of Dr Emily Webster, Director of Studies in Land Economy and a Teaching Fellow in Law.
Introduced by Professor Richard Fentiman KC and Life Fellow of Queens’, the 2023 Lecture was delivered on Wednesday 14th February 2024 by Lady Rose of Colmworth DBE PC, a Justice of the Supreme Court and member of the Privy Council. Lady Rose entitled her Lecture ‘The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council: “relic of empire” or “useful body”?’. She discussed the history of the JCPC, a court of final appeal for the UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies and described it as ‘an evolving institution generating important case law’. She provided an insight into some of the recent work of the Board and an awareness of the influence of its jurisprudence, from fishing rights in the Cook Islands to the death penalty in Jamaica. The Lecture can be viewed here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3rR3CjBst8&t=13s
The Lecture was followed by drinks, dinner in the Old Hall and a prize giving ceremony, all of which were presided over by Doctor Mohamed El-Erian. Lady Rose presented Tamara Bosten and Priya Jari with the Redress Solutions Undergraduate Prizes in Law. Redress extends its warmest congratulations to both students for their outstanding achievements.
